When Edith Cavell faced a German firing squad on Oct. 12, 1915 she didn’t intend to become a martyr for the allied cause, she thought she had been sentenced justly. Propaganda decided otherwise, and Cavell’s name quickly became justification for total warfare on the Western front of World War I.
